Linen vs cotton shirts
Both come from plants and both count as natural fiber on FabricTruth. The usual trade-off is linen’s strength and quick drying against cotton’s softness and fewer creases. Here’s what the sources support, and where they’re thin.
Bottom line
Linen is stronger than cotton and dries faster. Cotton creases less, and wrinkle-resistant finishes work better on it. In a same-brand example the two shirts cost the same. Neither fiber has good trial evidence for keeping you cooler.
Head to head
| Criterion | Linen | Cotton | Which side |
|---|---|---|---|
| Strength123 | Linen is stronger than cotton; flax gives long, strong fibers. | Cotton has “fair to good” strength, per a 2024 textile review. | Edge: linen |
| Drying14 | Linen dries more quickly than cotton. | Cotton absorbs about 8.5% of its weight in moisture and holds sweat longer. | Edge: linen |
| Wrinkles53 | Flax creases easily. Chemical wrinkle-resistant treatments used on cotton don’t work as well on linen, and the usual finishes lower its strength. | Cotton wrinkles too (a 2024 review calls it prone to wrinkling next to silk or wool), but wrinkle-resistant finishing works on it. | Edge: cotton |
| Softness63 | Feel depends on finishing. Some brands pre-wash linen with softeners so it’s soft from the first wear. | Cotton is “soft and comfortable” with good absorbency, per a 2024 textile review. | Depends on use |
| Heat78 | No trial we found tested linen shirts on body temperature. | Runners at 30 °C had the same body temperature in cotton as in polyester; a review found weave, weight and fit matter more than fiber. | About even |
| Farming910 | In Western Europe flax is generally grown without irrigation and with low fertilizer and pesticide inputs, per the flax trade body’s life cycle study. | Conventional cotton used about 2.4% of farmland but 4.7% of pesticides and 10% of insecticides in 2019. | Edge: linen |
| Price (example)1112 | Alex Crane’s 100% French linen Ola Shirt was $158. | Alex Crane’s organic cotton Air Cotton Button Up was also $158. | About even |
“Which side” is a plain reading of the cited evidence for that row, not a score. Prices are from product pages on November 2, 2026 and change often.
Counterpoints and caveats
- The low-input flax farming figures come from the flax and linen industry’s own trade body.9
- Linen’s cool-in-the-heat reputation isn’t backed by a fiber-specific trial; heat studies we found compared cotton and polyester.78
- “French linen” can describe where the flax grew, not where the shirt was made: Alex Crane’s French-linen Ola shirt is cut and sewn in India.112
- Across apparel, dyeing, finishing and yarn preparation outweigh the fiber stage in climate impact, so the fiber name alone doesn’t settle which shirt is greener.13
Short answers
- Is linen cooler than cotton?
It dries faster, but we found no trial comparing linen and cotton shirts on body temperature. Heat studies of other fabrics found fiber made little difference next to weave and fit.178
Counterpoint: A light, open cotton weave may wear as cool as a heavy linen; construction is what the studies point to.
- Does linen last longer than cotton?
Linen fiber is stronger than cotton.15
Counterpoint: We found no wear-life study comparing linen and cotton shirts, and wrinkle-resistant finishes on linen reduce its strength.
- Why does linen wrinkle more than cotton?
Flax’s cellulose is highly oriented, which gives poor crease recovery, and chemical wrinkle-resistant treatments used on cotton don’t work as well on linen.53
Counterpoint: Cotton wrinkles too; a 2024 review calls it prone to wrinkling next to silk or wool.
- Is a linen-cotton blend natural?
Yes. Both are plant fibers, so FabricTruth counts a linen-cotton blend, such as Alex Crane’s 50/50 Long Sleeve Sun Tee, as 100% natural.14
Counterpoint: Linen blended with viscose, lyocell, polyester or elastane isn’t, by our rule.
